Winter Fuel Payment: who gets it and how much

Open

This scheme is open.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland only.

Winter Fuel Payment is a one-off payment towards your heating bills for winter 2026 to 2027, based on your date of birth. Most people who qualify get it without doing anything, but if your income is over the threshold, HMRC will take it back afterwards.

If you were born on or before 27 June 1960 you could get between GBP 100 and GBP 300 to help you pay your heating bills for winter 2026 to 2027. If you live in Scotland you cannot get a Winter Fuel Payment.
Official guidance, 4 November 2024

Who gets it

You can get a Winter Fuel Payment if you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
GOV.UK, Winter Fuel Payment: Eligibility

The date is fixed each year rather than tied to State Pension age, so it moves later over time. GOV.UK also lists people who are not eligible even if they meet the birth-date cutoff: someone in hospital getting free treatment for the whole of the qualifying week, someone in prison for that whole week, and someone whose immigration leave says they cannot claim public funds.

If you live in a care home you can still get a Winter Fuel Payment, unless you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance and had already been in the care home since 29 June 2026 or earlier.

How much you get

The amount depends on your date of birth and who else lives with you, so it varies from household to household. The GOV.UK guidance sets out the full set of combinations; broadly, someone born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960 gets less than someone born before that date, and living alone or with someone who is also eligible changes the figure further.

You do not need to work out which band applies to you. If you are eligible, GOV.UK sends a letter in October or November telling you exactly how much you will get and which bank account it will go into.

When it is paid, and whether you need to claim

Most eligible people are paid in November or December 2026. GOV.UK says that if you have not had your letter, or the money has not reached your account, by 27 January 2027, you should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

You can also choose to opt out entirely, for example if you would rather not receive money you know will be clawed back under the income rule below. GOV.UK’s guidance sets out an online form, a paper form and a phone line, each with its own deadline in September, and opting out does not affect your State Pension.

Paying it back if your income is over the threshold

This is the change that catches people out. You still get paid automatically if you are eligible by age and residence, but HMRC reclaims the money afterwards if your own income is too high.

If your total income is over GBP 35,000, HMRC will take your Winter Fuel Payment back.

GOV.UK is explicit that this is tested on your own income, not your household’s: a partner’s income does not count towards your total, even if you are paid together as a couple. HMRC collects the money back either by adjusting your tax code or through Self Assessment, not by asking you to hand cash back yourself.

If you live in Scotland

For winter 2026 to 2027, mygov.scot sets the same birth-date cutoff for Pension Age Winter Heating Payment as GOV.UK uses for Winter Fuel Payment, and states the same income recovery threshold. Even so, the two schemes are administered separately and paid by different bodies, so a Scottish reader should not follow the England, Wales and Northern Ireland claim process on this page.

Other help with heating costs

GOV.UK’s guidance lists other support that can sit alongside Winter Fuel Payment rather than instead of it. A Cold Weather Payment is a separate, smaller payment triggered by a run of very cold days in your area. The Warm Home Discount is a one-off reduction applied to your energy bill rather than paid to you directly, for people on Pension Credit or in a low-income household on their supplier’s scheme. Your council may also run its own cost-of-living support under local rules.

These are different schemes with their own eligibility tests, so qualifying for one does not guarantee you qualify for another, and none of them replaces the need to check the Winter Fuel Payment rules on their own terms.

Common questions

What is the Winter Fuel Payment birth-date cutoff for winter 2026 to 2027?

You can get a Winter Fuel Payment if you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The cutoff date moves each year, so check it again for future winters rather than assuming it stays the same.

Do I need to apply for the Winter Fuel Payment?

Most people do not. If you already get State Pension or one of several other named benefits, you are paid automatically and sent a letter in October or November confirming the amount. You only need to make a claim if you have never received a Winter Fuel Payment before or you have deferred your State Pension since your last one.

When is the Winter Fuel Payment paid?

Most eligible people are paid in November or December 2026. If your letter has not arrived, or the money is not in your account, by 27 January 2027, GOV.UK says to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

Will I have to pay back my Winter Fuel Payment?

You only have to pay it back if your own total income is over the threshold. If it is, you still receive the payment automatically and HMRC claws it back afterwards, either by changing your tax code or through Self Assessment. A partner’s income is not counted towards yours.

Can I get Winter Fuel Payment in Scotland?

No. If you usually live in Scotland you cannot get Winter Fuel Payment. Social Security Scotland runs Pension Age Winter Heating Payment for Scottish residents instead, on a similar birth-date basis.

Is Winter Fuel Payment the same as the Cold Weather Payment?

No, they are separate schemes. Winter Fuel Payment is a fixed once-a-winter amount based on your date of birth. The Cold Weather Payment is a smaller, separate payment that only triggers when the temperature in your area is very cold for a run of days, and it depends on which benefits you receive rather than your age.
